SENEGAL: Thousands of students walked out of Senegal’s Cheikh Anta Diop University in the capital Dakar on Tuesday after authorities closed campus housing following the death of Abdoulaye Ba, a second-year medical student during protests over unpaid financial aid.
Mr Diop was killed following clashes a day before between the police and students.
CANADA: A shooting at a school in British Columbia left seven people dead, while two more were found dead at a nearby home, Canadian authorities said on Tuesday. A woman who police believe to be the shooter also was killed.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said more than 25 people are injured, including two who were airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries, after the shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
MADAGASCAR: At least nine people died on the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar after Tropical Cyclone Gezani made landfall, unleashing winds in excess of 121mph, authorities said today.
Madagascar’s weather service issued red alerts for several regions, warning of possible floods and landslides as Gezani moves across the country.
DEATH SENTENCE: A Sri Lankan court today sentenced 12 men to death for the killing of a lawmaker and his bodyguard in May 2022 during violence that erupted at the height of the island nation’s economic crisis.
The Gampaha High Court convicted the men for unlawful assembly, assault and the deaths of Amarakeerthi Athukorale and his bodyguard, said senior state counsel Oswald Perera.
Mr Athukorale, who was a ruling party lawmaker, and his guard were killed in Nittambuwa, about 18.6 miles north of the capital, Colombo.
