Sport in brief: October 3, 2025

SPEEDWAY: Britain’s team of Dan Bewley, Robert Lambert and Tom Brennan will defend their Speedway of Nations title in Torun, Poland on Saturday evening after finishing second to Sweden in their qualifying semi-final.

Last year’s runners-up Australia, led by Sheffield’s Jack Holder, dropped only one point as they powered through their semi final. Latvia, Denmark, Czechia and hosts Poland will make up the rest of the final.

HORSE RACING: The Gambling Commission’s latest survey has estimated that 1.4 million people, almost 3 per cent of British adults, suffer from problematic gambling behaviour.

This is much higher than the 0.4 per cent suggested by an NHS investigation carried out during the summer. More than 22 million adults reportedly bet, including buying a lottery ticket, at least once each month with almost half of them rating it as a negative experience.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Caledonia look to maintain their perfect start to defending the Betty Codona trophy when they host Nottingham on Sunday afternoon, before Manchester search for a first win when they face Newcastle in the northern group’s evening tip-off.

In the south, Essex Rebels begin their campaign against London on Saturday afternoon after Cardiff Met have taken on Leicester.

Super League champions Oaklands Wolves are not in action.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Just two points separate the Highland League’s top five before this weekend’s fixtures. Reigning champions and current table-toppers Brora Rangers are up against out-of-form Buckie Thistle, while it’s third against fourth when Brechin meet Fraserburgh at Glebe Park.

Second-placed Formartine, who only trail Brora on goal difference, miss out on league action as they face Aberdeen in the Evening Express Aberdeenshire Cup final.
