SNP table bid to scrap the two-child cap
SNP's Kirsty Blackman gives a speech, July 5, 2024

THE SNP will force another Westminster vote on scrapping the “shameful” two-child cap which consigns more than 300,000 children to poverty.

Kirsty Blackman MP, the party’s work and pensions spokesperson, has pledged to table a 10 minute-rule motion on Tuesday, before parliament goes back into recess for conference season.

The policy, which limits benefits such as universal credit and child tax credits to the first two children, was introduced by the Tories in 2017.

But despite the Child Poverty Action Group arguing scrapping the measure would immediately lift 300,000 children out of poverty, Labour have so far refused to do so.

Ms Blackman said: “It is shameful that under Keir Starmer, child poverty is soaring in the UK and the Labour Party is refusing to help hard-pressed families.

“There can be no more excuses for failing to act.

“Keir Starmer must follow the SNP’s lead and scrap the two-child benefit cap for good — or the Labour Party will consign thousands more children into poverty and damage their life chances.”

The Department for Work and Pensions was contacted for comment.
