Bus fares in Wales now £1 for young people under pilot scheme
Passengers queue to board a bus in Cardiff

YOUNG people in Wales can now travel by bus for £1 per single journey under a new pilot scheme to make public transport “more accessible and affordable.”

From today, single-journey fares for those aged 16 to 21 have been reduced to £1, while a full day pass now costs £3.

The scheme will be extended to five to 15-year-olds from November 3.

Lee Robinson of Transport for Wales said: “This pilot scheme is a significant step towards making public transport more affordable for young people in Wales.

“By reducing fares to just £1, we hope to encourage more young people to choose the bus.”

Welsh government Transport Minister Ken Skates said he hoped the scheme would help young people “access education, training, employment and leisure.”

About £15 million will be provided over two financial years to fund the scheme as part of a budget deal between the government and the Welsh Liberal Democrats.

To benefit from the reduced fares, young people must apply for a free mytravelpass.
