STAFF at Bangor University voted for industrial action this week, following a consultation process that students and unions condemned as “a shambles.”
Bangor’s University and College Union (UCU) branch won a consultative ballot, with 88 per cent of academic and professional services staff voting in favour of strike action to avoid compulsory redundancies.
UCU Cymru officer Gareth Lloyd said: “I am proud that Bangor branch managed to win its indicative ballot.
“This should give management serious pause for thought and we urge the vice-chancellor to drop all threats of compulsory redundancy.”
Rose Pugh of students’ union Undeb Bangor said: “The lack of accessible information and the rushed timeline undermined students’ ability to contribute to decisions that will shape their university experience.”
A Bangor University spokesperson said: “These are challenging financial times for the higher education sector across the UK.
“It is important to note that this process is still ongoing and we remain committed to doing all we can to avoid compulsory redundancies, with our focus continuing to be on voluntary measures.”
