Affordable rent victory for New Era tenants

HOUSING campaigners celebrated after beating an attempt by property speculators to triple their rents yesterday as their estate is to be bought by an affordable housing provider.

Residents of the New Era estate in east London scored the massive victory after US investors Westbrook sold their share to Dolphin Square Foundation.

Speaking on behalf of the New Era 4 All campaign, local Lindsey Garrett said: “We are delighted with the result.

“We won against a large corporation and it proves to everyone what an amazing result direct action has.

“We’ve shown that by fighting and having a voice.”

As previously reported by the Star, Ms Garrett and other residents were threatened with a rent increase of 275 per cent after Westbrook bought the estate.

Their victory comes after months of solid campaigning, a petition signed by almost 350,000 people and a visit to Downing Street.

Hoxton councillor Philip Glanville paid tribute to the tenants saying: “I hope that this change in ownership will ensure a real and sustainable future for them and the New Era Estate.

“Westbrook’s original plans would have torn the heart out of this community and while this news will be welcomed by the residents of New Era, sadly it does nothing to protect other Londoners living in private rented accommodation.”

The Labour politician added: “We need longer tenancies, index linked rent rises, the end of tenant fees and unscrupulous evictions.

“I hope the strength of feeling and support demonstrated over the last few weeks will continue and that we can put pressure on the government and the Mayor of London to introduce legislation for a fairer private rented sector.”
