The Hague convicts former general after five-year trial
THE UN war crimes tribunal convicted Bosnian Serb former general Ratko Mladic of genocide yesterday, sentencing him to life imprisonment.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague convicted Mr Mladic, who was chief of staff of Bosnian Serb forces from 1992 until 1996, over the three-year siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre during the 1992-95 war following the break-up of the socialist state.
Presiding Judge Alphons Orie read out the verdict after ordering Mr Mladic be removed for shouting: "This is all lies, this is a Nato court."
