IF GREAT YARMOUTH Trades Council’s low pay campaign illustrates the work of local trade unionists in fighting poverty pay, the Unemployed Workers Centre shows the lengths they go to support those even less fortunate.

It’s run out of the back room of a community centre operated by Manuel Mendonca, who hosts everything from Muslim and Christian prayer groups to free online IT courses and language tutoring.

His centre, funded on a shoestring from selling coffee and home-made snacks at rock-bottom prices and from his wife’s hairdressing business, is a safe space for anyone who needs one: “You need it? You can have it.”
