BRISTOL trade unionists, council officials and business representatives will be adding their names to a charter aimed at supporting terminally ill workers.

Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees will sign the Dying to Work Charter on Tuesday on behalf of 7,000 council employees. The charter seeks to discourage employers from dismissing workers because of their condition.

Representatives of the Unite union and legal insurer DAS UK will also sign the charter.

Unite regional co-ordinating officer Donna Williams said: “We welcome the signing of the Dying to Work charter with Bristol City Council, where we have members, as well as by DAS, which sends out a positive message to other employers in the city.

“This shows a strong commitment by both private and public sectors to support employees at the most difficult time in their lives — managing a terminal illness, but still with a valid contribution to make in the workplace.”
