ANGELA RAYNER urged her fellow MPs yesterday to “move forward” with Brexit in rejecting calls for a second referendum on European Union membership.
Labour’s shadow education secretary said that MPs should resist calls by anti-Brexit campaigners in the so-called People’s Vote group to consider holding a second referendum.
Speaking on Sky TV’s Sophy Ridge on Sunday, Ms Rayner said: “I would be really worried about a second referendum, to be honest.
“I don’t think people necessarily will expect the result they get.
“And the worst case scenario is that it will be a very narrow Remain.
“And then what? We’re going to have the best of three?”
Ms Rayner claimed that if there was another vote, she would “probably” vote to remain in the EU as she had campaigned on the Remain side during 2016.
However, she emphasised that having a second referendum at all would show that Parliament had failed the country’s electorate.
“I think that if we end up in a second referendum, us as politicians have failed the public.
“We’ve failed to be able to do our job.
“I will see that as a really difficult situation for us all to be in.”
Ms Rayner accused Prime Minister Theresa May of attempting to bully Labour into a no-deal Brexit and pledged that Labour would do “whatever it takes” to stop a no-deal Brexit occurring.
She said Labour’s priorities over Brexit were clear, adding: “We have respected the result of the referendum, we want to find a deal, we want a customs union, we want protection for the environment, for consumers and employment.”
