LAURA PIDCOCK committed to “rebuilding resistance to the Tories” as she urged people to join the People’s Assembly Against Austerity in fighting back.

The former Labour MP, who unexpectedly lost her seat to the Tories last month, pledged to support the Assembly’s call for unity against the Tories, and to renew local campaigns against cuts and austerity.

Ms Pidcock said: “There is real potential here.

“If we campaign hard over workers’ rights, climate change and rebuilding the services working-class communities need, there is no reason why we can’t defeat Boris Johnson and most importantly the hard-right ideas he represents, building a case for a different political system and then making that happen.”

Her endorsement comes as the People’s Assembly, which is supported by most major trade unions, announced that they are seeking to “regroup, reorganise and re-root” themselves across Britain.

They said that their major aim is to “link major mobilisations against the Tories with local campaigns which aim to rebuild the presence of trade unions and social movements in local communities.”

The People’s Assembly also wishes to “sustain the broad vision of social transformation that has characterised the movement in the last four years” and “reconnect it with a wider base of activists and supporters in every town and city throughout the country.”

The group said they were very pleased that Ms Pidcock, “one of the most powerful and effective voices of the labour movement,” had committed herself to the campaign.
