Unions slam Welsh Tory leader for claiming class doesn’t exist
Leader of the Welsh Conservatives Andrew RT Davies

UNIONS have denied a claim by Welsh Conservative Party leader Andrew RT Davies that the class system does not exist in Britain.

The farm owner and former boarding school pupil made the assertion in a Leader Interviews podcast for BBC Wales.

“I do not believe in modern Britain there is a class system,” he said.

“There is a class system in the left’s mind engrained by the Labour Party and their policy of just trying to keep a dependency culture.”

Wales TUC general secretary Shavanah Taj said: “These claims are simply wrong.

“Class discrimination is a reality and working people across Wales are forced to live with its consequences.

“It was working-class families that were hit hardest by a decade of cuts and it’s working-class families that have now been hit hardest again by the Covid crisis.

“The class system can’t just be ignored or wished away because it’s politically inconvenient and doesn’t fit the narrative.”

GMB senior organiser Mike Payne said: “After 10 years at the top of the Welsh Tories, he’s still oblivious to the real issues that affect the people of Wales.”
