Sturgeon announces surprise resignation as First Minister

NICOLA STURGEON said that “the time is now” as she announced today that she will step down as Scotland’s First Minister after eight years.

But her critics said that Ms Sturgeon and the Scottish National Party had held power for far too long.

The SNP leader said it was time to stand aside for herself, the party and Scotland but denied reacting to short-term pressures after a series of political setbacks.
