New law raising legal marriage age to 18 hailed for tackling forced marriages

A NEW law raising the legal age of marriage to 18 has been hailed as a huge leap forward in tackling the “hidden abuse” of forced marriages.
Under legislation coming into force today, 16 and 17-year-olds will no longer be permitted to wed or enter a civil partnership — even with their parents consent.
The move follows a global campaign seeking to protect children at risk from forced marriages.
