MUSICIAN Brian Eno and rail union RMT president Alex Gordon are expected to join anti-war campaigners later today to hand an open letter to Downing Street calling for peace in Ukraine.
In the letter, campaigners from Stop the War and Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament demand that the British government reverse its plans to provide long-range missiles, drones and fighter plane training to the Ukrainian military.
They instead highlight the urgent need for a ceasefire and peace talks to end the war that has “raged for over a year at great cost to the Ukrainian people and leading to greater instability worldwide.”
The letter, which is expected to be handed to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s residence in London later today, says that the Tory government is “leading the West’s efforts to escalate the war” and that Britain has more special forces in Ukraine than “any other country in a war it claims not to be involved in.”
It says: “These actions will only prolong the war and the suffering of the Ukrainian people, and they risk a wider, potentially nuclear, confrontation with Russia.
“Even senior US foreign policy figures admit there is no prospect of an all-out victory for either side.
“Rather than fanning the flames of war, our government should be backing growing international calls for peace negotiations and demanding a ceasefire and end to hostilities.”
Stop the War convener Lindsey German said: “We can see the war is escalating dangerously with attacks on both Kiev and Moscow.
“The British government’s refusal to talk about peace and its sending of offensive weapons, including cruise missiles, is only making the situation worse and will lead to further suffering by the Ukrainian people.
“We need a ceasefire and peace talks now.”
