Senedd committee calls on British Treasury to stop undermining Welsh government

SENEDD members have called for a cultural shift in relations between Cardiff and London to stop the British Treasury from undermining the Welsh government.

The Senedd’s finance scrutiny committee report, published today, found that the “whims or personalities of Treasury ministers” have influenced communication between London and Cardiff.

The committee urged the British government to be more transparent with future funding announcements and make clear if money for Wales is new.

Following the categorisation of the High-Speed rail line (HS2) as a Wales project, despite no track being laid in Wales, the report calls for the Welsh government to have a greater role in categorising large projects.

Finance committee chairman Peredur Owen Griffiths said: “Too often, politicians in London seem to pretend that devolution doesn’t exist.”

A Welsh government spokesperson said: “Since the committee started this inquiry, a new UK government has been elected which has provided a welcome reset in relations.

“We thank the committee for its report and recommendations, which we will now consider.”
