20mph road signs in Brynawel, Wales

THE number of collisions on Welsh roads has fallen by almost a quarter since the controversial 20 mph speed limit came into force, records show.

The latest police statistics for road collisions for April to June 2024 show a 24 per cent reduction in both incidents and casualties on 20mph and 30mph roads, compared with the same period in 2023, making them the lowest figures recorded outside the coronavirus pandemic.

In the nine months following the introduction of 20mph speed limits in September 2023, collisions and casualties dropped by over a quarter.
