THE Bishop of London Sarah Mullally has been urged to “speak truth to power” on the climate emergency when she is enthroned as archbishop of Canterbury at the beginning of next year.

Environmentalist group Christian Climate Action staged a protest outside Lambeth Palace on Sunday, unfurling a banner reading “Don’t crucify creation” following the launch of a new document calling for radical reform within the Church of England to tackle climate breakdown.

Members took the document and banners to vigils at cathedrals across the country where responses varied.

At some locations, members were welcomed to speak, while at others they were escorted out by security. In Bath, four protesters were arrested by police.

A Christian Climate Action spokesperson said: “We acknowledge the many unseen climate and nature champions who are working tirelessly across Church of England dioceses to mitigate the impacts of the crisis.

“This is despite the huge pressures many parishes face.

“We are calling on the church to return to its roots [to tackle] the most urgent issue creation faces: climate breakdown.”
