Midwife launches fast in solidarity with the people of Gaza
Sharyn Luck

A MIDWIFE has begun a five-day fast in front at Holyrood as she campaigns for Palestinian human rights, an end to weapons sales to Israel and peace in the Middle East.

Sharyn Luck, who has previosuly worked in the West Bank, Lebanon and Gaza — where she was a volunteer human rights observer in hospitals and Red Cresecent ambulances — will hold a vigil each day outside the Scottish Parliament until Thursday.

Inspired by children she met on a recent school visit, Ms Luck told the Star: “I was talking to a primary school class about this recently and they know that our human rights are inalienable.

“Civilians out to be able to access healthcare safely, pregnant women ought to be able to know they have somewhere safe to have their babies, everyone ought to know that hospitals are a safe space and somehow we have all lost sight of the absolute fundamentals that the primary school kids had really clear.

“They were also able to tell me that nobody should be treated with prejudice, that none of their human rights should be withheld because of the colour of their skin, or their gender, or their religious belief, or where they live.

“I feel that some of our politicians need to speak to some of the school kids, because it’s only been clearer and clearer every day since last year that they should not only be calling for a ceasefire — obvisously — but the UK should not be sending weapons in any way, shape or form to Israel.

“Now there are arrest warrants for the people we are selling weapons to, there should be absolutely no conflict on that question — we need to stop that right now.”
