Anti-whaling activist Paul Watson freed and won't face extradition to Japan
Signs at a protest outside the Danish embassy in Dublin calling for the release of veteran environmental activist and anti-whaling campaigner Paul Watson, who has been detained in Nuuk, Greenland on an international arrest warrant issued by Japan, July 26, 2024

ANTI-WHALING activist Paul Watson was freed from prison in Greenland today and will not be extradited to Japan, the Danish Justice Ministry and defence lawyers said.

Japan had asked Denmark to extradite Mr Watson, who had been in custody in Greenland since his arrest earlier this year under a Japanese warrant.

Mr Watson’s foundation said that he faced a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison in Japan, which does not have an extradition treaty with Denmark.
