SIX years late and more than three times over budget, the first of two new CalMac ferries — the Glen Sannox — will finally enter service in January.

The vessel had been due to be delivered by Greenock’s Ferguson Marine yard in 2018 as part of a £97 million two-ferry deal.

But the contract has been beset with cost overruns and accusations of mismanagement leading the yard into receivership and nationalisation.

The total bill to CalMac is expected to top £380m by the time its sister ship the Glen Rosa is due to be delivered later in 2025.

The ferry will serve the key Arran route, controversially leaving from Troon after Ardrossan Harbour’s owners Peel Ports failed to upgrade its facilities in time, despite the six-year delay. 

CalMac chief executive Duncan Mackison called it “great news for the Arran community.”

Scottish Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: “The entry into service of the MV Glen Sannox is very welcome news, as this new vessel will support the people of Arran and wider ferry network.

“We can all now look forward to her bringing benefits to our island communities and ferry users.”
