INDONESIA: Prabowo Subianto was inaugurated yesterday as the country’s eighth president, completing his journey from an ex-general accused of human rights abuses under Indonesia’s military dictatorship to the presidential palace.

The former defence minister was cheered through the streets by thousands of waving supporters after taking his oath on the Koran in front of legislators and foreign dignitaries.

RUSSIA: Authorities said air defences had destroyed 110 Ukrainian drones yesterday over the country’s western regions.

The Defence Ministry said the drones shot down had been part of an overnight barrage against seven Russian regions. Many targeted the border region of Kursk, where 43 drones were reportedly knocked out.

GERMANY: Authorities said yesterday that they had arrested a man with suspected ties to jihadist group Islamic State who was allegedly planning a gun attack on the Israeli embassy.

Police and other security forces detained him on Saturday evening in Bernau, a town just outside of Berlin, and searched his home there, the Federal Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

It added that the suspect was a Libyan national, identifying him only as Omar A.

GUATEMALA: The family of a journalist jailed for more than two years amid his daily newspaper’s anti-corruption investigations celebrated his transfer to house arrest on Saturday.

Jose Ruben Zamora, who founded El Periodico, which specialised in anti-corruption reporting and closed a year ago, walked out of prison and said: “I’m very grateful for everyone’s solidarity. Without you I would have been forgotten.”
