UNION leaders and Labour ministers could clash on Saturday as they meet to thrash out a final position on the party’s manifesto commitment to a New Deal for Working People.

In advance of Labour’s conference in Liverpool, 11 trade union general secretaries will face ministers to ensure that no watering down of the proposals is on the cards.

They will reportedly meet Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds to agree details of the package on the eve of conference.

One senior union source told the Morning Star: “We fear they may be watered down again.

“The cabinet is not stuffed with leftwingers. It has plenty of people happy to listen to bosses who have been lobbying hard to water down some of the manifesto commitments further.”

Ms Rayner has expressed her determination to see fire and rehire and zero-hours contracts consigned to history.

However she sits alongside Cabinet colleagues who have already made concessions.
