RARELY does a Hollywood remake of an acclaimed film live up to, never mind surpass, the original and this adaptation of the Oscar-winning Argentinian mystery thriller El Secreto de sus Ojos is no exception.

Drawing on a stellar cast, writer-director Billy Ray delivers an adequate crime drama. But it fails to capture the remarkable essence of the original, pandering as it does to those with an aversion to subtitles.

It’s set in Los Angeles, where former FBI investigator Ray Kasten (Chiwetel Ejiofor) returns to the District Attorney’s office with a new lead to convince the DA Claire Sloan (Nicole Kidman), his lost love, to reopen the case of the murder of investigator Jess Cobb’s (Julia Roberts) daughter Caroline 13 years earlier.
