GAMBIA: MPs rejected legislation today that would have overturned a ban on female genital cutting. The attempt to become the world’s first country to reverse such a ban had been closely followed by activists abroad.
The vote followed months of heated debate in the largely Muslim nation of fewer than three million people. MPs effectively killed the Bill by rejecting all its clauses and preventing a final vote.
KENYA: Police said today that they have arrested the main suspect after nine dismembered bodies of women were found in a quarry in the capital Nairobi.
Directorate of Criminal Investigations head Mohamed Amin said that Collins Jumaisi Khalusha had confessed to killing 42 women, including his wife, since 2022. They gave no evidence to support his claim.
He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
ESTONIA: Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has stepped down to become the European Union foreign policy chief later this year.
Under Ms Kallas, Estonia has been one of Europe’s most vocal backers of Ukraine following Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
NEPAL: Rescuers have recovered 11 bodies from the river after two packed buses were swept into by a landslide on Friday, officials said today.
Rescuers found the bodies in different spots along the riverbanks as they searched for the missing buses and some 50 people who were on board. Two of the bodies were reportedly found in Tribeni, more than 60 miles from the landslide site.
