SUDAN: The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claimed to have seized the army HQ in Singa, capital of Sennar province, yesterday, but this was contradicted by the military.
The RSF opened a new front in Sudan’s civil war with an offensive in Sennar last week.
About 15,000 people have been killed in the conflict between the two forces, which erupted last year.

NIGERIA: At least 18 people were killed in suicide bombings in the northern town of Gwoza on Saturday.
The attacks, thought to be by the Boko Haram jihadist group, targeted a wedding, a funeral and a hospital.
The suicide bombers are thought to have been women, possibly kidnap victims from its raids on schools.

CANADA: Over 400 flights affecting almost 50,000 passengers will have been cancelled by the end of the Canada Day long weekend because of a strike by mechanics.
The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association said WestJet airline bosses refuse to negotiate on pay.
WestJet chief Alexis von Hoensbroech slammed it as a “rogue union from the US,” where it is headquartered. 

SERBIA: A crossbowman who fired on a police officer guarding the Israeli embassy in Belgrade was shot dead on Saturday.
The attacker fired a crossbow bolt into the neck of the officer, who fired back. 
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic described the incident as a terrorist attack. “We are hunting them down. We will have no mercy on terrorism in Serbia.”
