FRANCE: Two prison officers were killed and three others seriously injured in an attack on their convoy in Normandy today during which an inmate escaped, officials said.

The van was transporting prisoner Mohamed Amra to Evreux jail after a court hearing in Rouen when it was ambushed.

Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti said he would join a crisis unit to address the emergency. “All means are being used to find these criminals,” he said. 

PAKISTAN: A missile fired by a drone struck a house in a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban in the north-west along the Afghan border before dawn today, killing at least four villagers, including children, police said.

The strike happened in South Waziristan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, local police chief Hidayat Ullah said. He said it was not immediately clear who fired the missile and officers were investigating. 

POLAND: A cave-in at the Myslowice-Wesola coal mine in the south early today left three miners missing and 12 hurt, mining authorities said today.

The cave-in happened 2,800 feet underground in an area where 15 miners were working.

About 11 miners were reportedly brought to the surface with various injuries. Nine of them remain hospitalised.

INDIA: A large billboard collapsed onto people during heavy rain and thunderstorms in Mumbai, killing at least 14 and injuring 74 others, reports said.

A rescue operation was ongoing today morning, and it was unclear how many people may still be trapped but at least 47 were rescued late into the night.

The rains, accompanied by high winds, caused the100-foot-tall billboard to fall over a gas station in the suburb of Ghatkopar on Monday evening.
