
GERMANY: A court today lifted a ban imposed by the government last year on Compact, a far-right magazine, ruling that the case against it didn’t clear the high bar required to outlaw its publisher.
Compact appealed to the Federal Administrative Court, which suspended the ban in August pending a full consideration of the case.
Following a hearing earlier this month, the court lifted the ban altogether on Tuesday.
JAPAN: Tokyo announced today that it conducted a missile test for the first time on Japanese territory.
The test-firing of the Type-88 surface-to-ship short range missile was conducted on Tuesday at an army firing range in Japan’s northern main island of Hokkaido.
Japan has previously conducted missile tests overseas, including in the territories of its defence partners such as the United States and Australia.
MOZAMBIQUE: At least 120 children have been kidnapped by jihadist insurgents in northern Mozambique in recent days, Human Rights Watch said today, warning of a rise in abductions in the country’s troubled Cabo Delgado province.
The children are reportedly being used by an Islamic State–linked group known, locally as al-Shabab, to transport looted goods, perform forced labour and in some cases serve as child soldiers or be forced into marriage.
GREECE: Hundreds of firefighters backed up by aircraft were battling a wildfire burning out of control for the third day on the eastern Aegean island of Chios today, with authorities issuing multiple evacuation orders.
By Tuesday morning, the fire department said 444 firefighters with 85 vehicles were tackling the blaze on scattered fronts. Eleven helicopters and two water-dropping planes were providing air support.
