SOUTH ASIA: Over 200 people have been killed and scores remain missing after 24 hours of flash floods hit India and Pakistan.

Rescuers saved 1,600 people brought out of mountainous districts. In Pakistan, a relief helicopter carrying supplies crashed in the bad weather, killing all five people on board.

SWITZERLAND: A Geneva summit on plastic pollution ended today without agreeing a treaty to tackle the problem. Last year’s attempt in South Korea ended without agreement too.

UN Environment Programme executive director Inger Andersen said “significant progress was made,” but it was impossible to tell how long it would take to achieve a treaty.

FRANCE: Authorities have vowed to catch vandals suspected of an anti-semitic provocation.

A commemorative tree planted 14 years ago in Epinay-sur-Seine in memory of murdered Jewish man Ilan Halimi has been felled with a chainsaw.

Halimi had been kidnapped and tortured for weeks before being dumped naked near a railway line, dying from his injuries.

French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou said the olive tree had been “felled by anti-semitic hatred.”

SWEDEN: A shooting near a mosque in Orebro left two people wounded today. They were fired at while leaving Friday prayers and one has been taken to hospital.

Police have opened a preliminary investigation into attempted murder.

The gunman is on the run and whether his motive was Islamophobia or he had a personal connection to the victims is unclear.
