NIGERIA: A bus veered off a bridge in Nigeria’s northern state of Kano on Saturday, killing at least 22 athletes returning home from a sports festival and leaving several other passengers injured, the state’s governor said today, with the cause not immediately known.
The athletes had taken part in the Nigerian National Sports Festival in the southern state of Ogun over the last week.
INDIA: Landslides and flash flooding triggered by days of torrential monsoon rains in India’s north-east have killed at least 22 people, officials have said.
Five people were killed on Saturday when their homes were buried in a mudslide in Assam state’s Guwahati city.
In neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh state, seven people were killed on Friday when their vehicle was swept away by floodwaters. Two others drowned in a separate incident in the state.
Eight people were also killed in the states of Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya.
GERMANY: Three elderly patients were killed and many people were injured by a fire in a Hamburg hospital, authorities said today.
The fire broke out overnight on the ground floor of the building before spreading, German news agency dpa reported, with the cause not immediately clear.
UKRAINE: Kiev is due to send a delegation to Istanbul for a new round of direct peace talks with Russia on Monday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that Defence Minister Rustem Umerov will lead Ukraine’s delegation.
He said: “We are doing everything to protect our independence, our state and our people.”
