SWEDEN: Officials said today they will summon the Iraqi  ambassador in Stockholm to protest against death sentences received by Swedes in Iraq.

Last month, Stockholm protested over a death sentence given to a Swede. On Thursday, two more cases were confirmed, bringing the total to at least three Swedes who have been sentenced to death in Iraq in recent weeks. 

SLOVAKIA: The suspect in the attempted assassination in May of Slovakia’s populist prime minister Robert Fico is now facing terror charges as part of an investigation by authorities, the country’s prosecutor general said today.

Maros Zilinka said in a statement that the suspect identified only as JC, who was originally charged with attempted murder, now faces the additional charges. 

RUSSIA: The Kremlin said today that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Russia on July 8-9 for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. 

The visit was first announced by the Russian officials last month, but the dates have not been previously disclosed. 

FRANCE: Just days before a high-stakes legislative election, French government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot was attacked on the campaign trail, officials said today.

Ms Thevenot, a candidate for the President Macron’s Ensemble alliance, her deputy and a party activist were putting up electoral posters near Paris on Wednesday night ahead of the July 7 legislative election when a group attacked them.

Media outlets reported that Ms Thevenot was not injured and will continue to campaign, but her deputy and the party activist were taken to a hospital. It was not immediately clear what type of injuries they suffered.
