ITALY: Rome and Beijing today signed a three-year action plan to implement past agreements and experiment with new forms of co-operation, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on an official visit to China today.

Ms Meloni said: “We certainly have a lot of work to do and I am convinced that this work can be useful in such a complex phase on a global level, and also important at a multilateral level.”

RUSSIA: President Vladimir Putin said today that Moscow may deploy new strike weapons in response to the planned United States stationing of longer-range and hypersonic missiles in Germany.

Speaking at a naval parade in St Petersburg, Mr Putin vowed to implement “mirror measures” after the US announced that it will start deploying the weapons in 2026 earlier this month.

CHINA: At least 15 people were killed after a mudslide hit a house in a tourist area in south-eastern China today as heavy rains from what remained of a tropical storm drenched the region, local media said.

The deaths were the first in China that appear linked to Typhoon Gaemi, which weakened to a tropical storm after making landfall on Thursday. 

UNITED STATES: New York Mayor Eric Adams issued an emergency order Saturday suspending parts of a new law intended to ban solitary confinement in local jails a day before it was to take effect, citing concerns for the safety of staff and detainees.

The mayor suspended parts of the law that set a four-hour time limit on holding prisoners who pose safety concerns in “de-escalation confinement” and limit the use of restraints on prisoners while they are transported to courts or within jails.
