
ALBANIA: A court today began the trial on corruption charges of former prime minister Sali Berisha, who leads the opposition Democratic Party, over a property deal.
The trial for the 80-year-old, at the Special Court for Corruption and Organised Crime, which covers cases involving senior officials and politicians, also includes his son-in-law and three other people.
KENYA: Prominent activist Boniface Mwangi was charged with unlawful possession of tear gas canisters in a case stemming from his alleged role in street protests against the government.
Opposition leaders and his followers had feared he would be charged with the more serious offence of terrorism. He was freed on bond.
UKRAINE: Russia launched a major aerial attack on Kiev just hours before Nato allies met to discuss US President Donald Trump’s plans for military support for Ukraine.
The attack killed two people and wounded 15, including a 12-year-old, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
SOUTH KOREA: The death toll from torrential rains rose to at least 18 as nine others remain missing, authorities said, as the government lifted advisories for heavy rain and the meteorological agency warned of a return of heatwaves to southern parts of the country.
The rise came as South Korea’s military also announced it was dispatching thousands of troops to rain-ravaged areas to assist in recovery efforts.
