BANGLADESH: Huge crowds lined the streets of Dhaka yesterday to attend funeral prayers for former prime minister Khaleda Zia, who died on Tuesday, aged 80.
Ms Zia was buried in the late afternoon with state honours beside the grave of her husband, a former president who was assassinated in a military coup in 1981.
She became Bangladesh’s first female prime minster in 1991.
INDIAN OCEAN: A deep-sea search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 began yesterday, more than a decade after the jet and its 239 passengers and crew vanished.
The exact location of the search was not disclosed by Malaysia’s Transport Ministry.
The plane disappeared from radar shortly after taking off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing on March 8 2014.
INDONESIA: Authorities have raised the alert for the Mount Bur Ni Telong volcano to its second-highest level following increased activity and volcanic earthquakes, official said yesterday.
The 8,600-foot stratovolcano recorded at least seven earthquakes on Tuesday evening that were felt about three miles away, said Geological Agency acting head Lana Saria.
GERMANY: Thieves have stolen tens of millions of euros’ worth of property from safety deposit boxes after drilling into a bank vault, police said yesterday.
Around 2,700 customers’ boxes were hit on Monday, with the goods stolen estimated to be worth between €10 million and €90m (£8.7m-£78.7m).
