EUROPEAN UNION: The number of workers who can’t afford a week’s holiday has increased by more than two million, a new report by the European Trade Union Confederation said today.

EU data shows that an estimated 39.7 million working people (15 per cent) could not afford a week away from home, either in their own country or abroad, in 2022 – up from 37.6 million (14 per cent) in 2021.

INDIA: Multiple landslides in the south have killed 93 people and many others are feared trapped under the debris, officials said today, after torrential rains triggered torrents of mud and water that swept through tea estates and villages.

The landslides hit hilly areas in Kerala state’s Wayanad district early today, flattening houses, uprooting trees and destroying bridges. Authorities have yet to determine the full scope of the disaster.

BANGLADESH: The country observed a day of mourning today for the more than 200 people killed in recent weeks during violence that grew out of student protests over the quota system for government jobs.

After weeks of peaceful protests by students looking to change the system, violence erupted on July 15 when activists of a student wing of the ruling party attacked demonstrators. Security forces opened fire with tear gas and rubber bullets.
