CHINA: A knife attack near a school in the capital today injured five people, including three children, police said.

The mid-afternoon attack occurred in Beijing’s north-western Haidian district. None of the injuries was life threatening, police said.

A suspect was detained at the scene and is under investigation.

CHAD: Unidentified assailants killed at least 40 soldiers in a night raid on a military base in the country’s west, the president’s office said today.

President Mahamat Deby Itno visited the base in Barkaram, an island in Chad’s lake region, today and announced the launch of a military operation to track the assailants.

AUSTRIA: Two people were shot dead today in a rural area of northern Austria, police said, and the suspected shooter was on the run.

The body of a man was found early today in the Muehlviertel area of Upper Austria, the Austria Press Agency reported.

Police said later in the morning that there was a second victim. Austrian media reported, without naming sources, that one was a local mayor.

PAKISTAN: Police arrested a lawyer and her husband who are known for taking on human rights cases today.

Islamabad police said they arrested Amaan Mazari and Abdul Hadi on a charge of interfering in government matters to cause a security risk, after the couple days earlier had forcibly tried to remove a road blockade placed by police in the capital for the security of England’s cricket team.
