Welsh Anti-Nuclear Alliance relaunches 46 years on

PEACE, environmental and social justice groups relaunched the Welsh Anti-Nuclear Alliance (Wana) today.

Originally launched in 1980, the alliance remained a vehicle for campaigning for decades.

A new coalition has restarted Wana due to nuclear energy generation having again become a vital political topic, an alliance spokesman said.

The group has published a manifesto it calls a “collective call upon decision-makers, communities and the people of Wales to work for a nuclear-power-and-weapons-free, sustainably powered and peaceful Wales.”

“Wana is about bringing organisations and activists together to oppose nuclear development, highlight the concerns and risks of nuclear development and to fiercely advocate for the true renewable options our future must be built on,” the spokesman said.

“The cost of nuclear is too high, the build times too long and the waste question remains unanswered.”

Among the group comprising Wana are Cadno (Cymdeithas Niwclear Oesel), CND Cymru, the Low-Level Radiation Campaign, the Low-Level Radiation and Health Conference, No Nuclear Llynfi, Pawb (People Against Wylfa-B), Stop Hinkley and Welsh Nuclear Free Local Authorities.

CND Cymru national secretary Dylan Lewis-Rowlands said: “CND Cymru has always been concerned about the civil and military nuclear links.

“This is why we must be active in campaigning against civil nuclear energy, alongside all the environmental, economic and other concerns.”

Pawb spokesman Dylan Morgan added: “The large Rolls-Royce modular reactor is the nuclear industry’s latest attempt to get the taxpayers of the British state to pour money into the bottomless pit of nuclear power.

“It is untested and evidence so far points towards cutting safety corners to save money.”
