Two dead and tens of thousands without power after Storm Isha
Waves break on the sea front in Blackpool, January 22, 2024

TWO people died and tens of thousands of homes were without power after Storm Isha battered Britain with gusts of up to 99mph on Sunday and today.

Transport services largely recovered today but some roads remained closed and rail lines blocked, while dozens of schools were shut.

The next storm due to hit Britain, Storm Jocelyn, is expected to bring more strong winds overnight into tomorrow morning.

An 84-year-old man died during Storm Isha after the car in which he was a passenger hit a fallen tree in Grangemouth, Falkirk, late on Sunday, Police Scotland said.

And in Northern Ireland, a man in his sixties was killed in a crash involving two vans and a fallen tree in Limavady, Co Derry, police said.

An amber weather warning issued by the Met Office covered the whole of Britain at the time.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for wind covering western and northern Scotland from 6pm tonight until 8am tomorrow.
