THE TUC will slam the Tories for failing working people today, dismissing the Prime Minister’s economic claims as “laughable.”

While millions continue to struggle with the cost of living, Rishi Sunak said that inflation was “back to normal” last month and congratulated himself on the “major milestone.”

The consumer price index (CPI) still missed economists’ targets, after it slowed to 2.3 per cent in April, down from 3.2 per cent the month before, but Mr Sunak claimed that “brighter days are ahead.”

Torsten Bell from the Resolution Foundation pointed out that Britain’s inflation shock has been the largest in the G7, with 11 years’ worth of “normal” 2 per cent inflation occurring in just three years.

TUC research shows that real wages are still worth less than in 2008, while four million are trapped in insecure jobs and long-term sickness remains at record highs. 

According to the TUC’s analysis of official statistics, Britain has seen the sharpest rise in unemployment among OECD countries this year, while job vacancies have plummeted.

Unemployment levels increased by 178,000 across England between October-December 2023 and January-March 2024.

TUC general secretary Paul Nowak will call Mr Sunak’s economic boasts “frankly laughable.”

“It shows just how out of touch he and his government are — and this complacency is costing Britain dear,” he will say.

“The Conservatives are failing working people. Joblessness and economic inactivity are up. Our country is crying out for change.

“We need a government that will make work pay and deliver better jobs, growth and living standards.”
