Trade unionists raising funds to provide holidays for children in a West Bank refugee camp

TRADE unionists are raising money to give disabled children in a Palestinian refugee camp a holiday.

Members of branches of union Unite in London and England’s south-west have established links with Shu’fat refugee camp on the outskirts of Jerusalem.

The branches help fund an annual summer camp for disabled children from Shu’fat.

Organisers said: “Even in ‘normal’ times — if there ever is such a thing in Israel-Palestine — the children of Shu’fat can rarely enjoy a swimming pool and pleasant countryside.

“Residents of Shu’fat camp are receiving increasingly hostile treatment.

“We friends of Shu’fat are taking up a collection to make sure this much-needed respite for those in need somehow takes place.”

The annual summer camp is threatened with cancellation due to the British government’s withdrawal of funding to United Nations refugee organisation UNRWA.
