A TOP Russian lawmaker issued a stern warning on Thursday about Japan’s military expansion.

Speaking at the first International Security Forum in Moscow, Russian Security Council secretary Sergei Shoigu accused Japan of slowly but steadily ramping up its military capabilities, having already acquired medium- and short-range missiles.

Mr Shoigu said: “There is a gradual push for further militarisation in Japan. The country is moving increasingly away from the documents and agreements, more precisely, the obligations it undertook when signing the Instrument of Surrender.”

Mr Shoigu also pointed the finger at the United States for the increased militarisation of Asia.

A Bill is working its way through the US Congress that seeks to create a so-called Asian Nato.

“The very emergence of this Bill is a cause for serious concern for Russia,” said Mr Shoigu.

The Russian lawmaker also warned that the prospect of nuclear weapons emerging in the Asia-Pacific region cannot be ruled out as the militarisation of the region ramps up.

More than 150 delegations from over 120 countries are attending the forum to discuss security-related issues, the protection of traditional values, and measures to counter neocolonialism and neonazism, according to the Russian Security Council’s press service.
