Starmer plays down row with Trump over Labour volunteers helping Harris
Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally at Greensboro Coliseum, October 22, 2024, in Greensboro, North Carolina

PRIME Minister Sir Keir Starmer has insisted his relationship with Donald Trump is not in jeopardy after a row erupted today over Labour volunteers helping Kamala Harris.

The Republican presidential candidate’s campaign accused the party of interfering in the US election on Tuesday night.

It announced an official complaint following reports of senior Labour officials meeting with Ms Harris’s campaign, and Labour Party staff volunteering on the ground for it.

But Sir Keir insisted any members of his party were in the US on an entirely voluntary basis.

“That’s what they’ve done in previous elections, is what they’re doing in this election...and that’s really straightforward,” he said.

Last month Sir Keir said that he met Mr Trump face to face during a trip to New York because he is “a great believer in personal relationships on the world stage.”

A Labour Party spokesperson said: “It is common practice for campaigners of all political persuasions from around the world to volunteer in US elections.

“Where Labour activists take part, they do so at their own expense, in accordance with the laws and rules.”
