SPEEDWAY: Belle Vue’s Dan Bewley won his second British Grand Prix in three years after racing home two points clear of Robert Lambert in Saturday night’s event under the roof at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. Birmingham captain Fredrik Lindgren finished third with defending world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik way off the pace in tenth but he remains 21 points clear of second-placed Lambert in the overall standings.
MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: St George Illawarra beat Gold Coast 32-16 on Sunday to move into the NRL play-off places while Cronulla earned a golden point 19-18 win over Newcastle. League leaders Melbourne are four points clear after edging out champions Penrith 24-22 in their top of the table clash with Sydney Roosters two points further back in third following their 38-14 win over Parramatta. Bottom club Wests squeezed past the Rabbitohs 18-16 on Saturday.
MEN’S FOOTBALL: The German Cup first round continues tonight with six-time winners Werder Bremen visiting third tier outfit Energie Cottbus, minnows Koblenz hosting Wolfsburg, Braunschweig up against Frankfurt in the battle of the Eintrachts and Magdeburg travelling to Kickers Offenbach. Magdeburg were seven-time winners of the old East German Cup. Champions Bayer Leverkusen are at Carl Zeiss Jena on Wednesday evening.
MEN’S RUGBY UNION: South Africa made ten changes to the team that thumped Australia 33-7 last week and still cruised to a bonus point 30-12 victory over the Wallabies in Perth on Saturday. The Springboks top the Rugby Championship by five points from New Zealand who recovered from their surprise defeat to Argentina by thumping the Pumas 42-10 at Eden Park. South Africa host the All Blacks in the next round of games.
