BRITAIN’S shameful ban on secondary industrial action was condemned by GMB Congress today.
Delegates passed a motion calling for the repeal of the ban on union members taking strike action in solidarity with others.
Lifting the ”draconian and archaic” ban would allow unions to picket workplaces other than their own — allowing them to enter disputes with parent companies, suppliers, financiers or other contracting parties.
Moving the motion, North West London delegate James Rolles said: ”The law is absolutely wrong. It is unfair and it needs changing.”
Seconding, delegate Jamie Walker said: ”This isn’t just unjust, it’s shameful. It leaves employers with a convenient loophole to divide workers by a technicality, not by principle.
”It’s time to stop pretending that UK’s trade union rights are world-leading when we are banned from supporting our colleagues.”
Peers were due to debate an amendment to the Employment Rights Bill that would lift the ban today.
