IT’S a cracking day of racing with something for everyone. We see the Grand National fences in operation for the first time this season, it’s the final day of the turf flat campaign at Doncaster and Wincanton finally gets the chance to race again due to the recent rain with some fascinating events from a feature handicap chase, through to a top novice chase and the Grade Two Elite Hurdle.

The last named sees the remarkably consistent and talented Sceau Royal attempt a hat-trick of victories after roaring home by five and a half lengths and seven and a half lengths in the last two renewals. The 10-year-old showed that the fire still burns bright when hacking up by nine and a half lengths on his seasonal debut in a Listed event at Kempton Park last month, but this is another step up for him.

On this his hat-trick bid at Wincanton, he has to overcome the impressive Silver Trophy winner KNAPPERS HILL from the red hot Paul Nicholls’s yard at 3.00.

The only time this progressive six-year-old totally blew out came on soft ground at Sandown Park in the big Novices Hurdle Final in March while his only other defeats last season came when a fine sixth in the Grade 3 National Hunt Hurdle race and when third to the smart Jonbon in the Kennel Gate Novices’ Hurdle at Ascot.

A winner of a novice hurdle over this course and distance, his high cruising speed allied to his turn of foot is well suited to this sharp Somerset track, and I fancy he can make the most of the 6lbs he is set to receive from the elder statesman.

The big betting race of the day is the Listed National Hunt steeplechase at 1.50 and top weight Frodon is sure to be a well backed favourite, running off his lowest handicap mark since January 2018.

It could be that he is on the downgrade, but a rating of 158 still seems very fair in the circumstances. Twice runner-up in this contest, Potterman has fair claims off 149, while last year’s surprise winner Rocco is 2lbs lower this time around and we know has a cracking record fresh.

But with the ground likely to remain good or possibly even faster, I think we will see a bounce back effort from ENRILO (nb), stable mate of Frodon. Nicholls reported that he never had his charge right last season, hence the standard wind operation for the eight-year-old. But the handicapper has been very kind to the son of Buck’s Boum and off a nice racing weight and with a fair record fresh he should prove hard to beat partnered by stable jockey Harry Cobden.

The Grade Two Rising Stars Novices Chase at 1.15 has been won by some top novices in the past and I fancy that SEBASTOPOL can add his name to that list this afternoon. The most experienced chaser in the field with a record of three wins from nine outings, he warmed up for this with a one paced second to the aforementioned Sceau Royal At Kempton. I think he looks the value to take care of classy staying hurdler McFabulous who is coming to the chasing game quite late at the age of eight, going on nine.

And so on to Aintree and the 2m5f Grand Sefton Handicap Chase at 2.11 looks a really good renewal with Two For Gold running off top weight, equating to a mark of 159. That’s a fair enough rating for this nine-year-old who has a superb strike rate of 10 from 21 under rules. He looks sure to make a good fist of things and I make him the main danger to AL DANCER.

Now I know I am taking a chance with this nine-year-old with his fencing having been called into question in the past, but I think he was too good to pass up off a rating of 144. He mixed hurdling with chasing last year with indifferent results, but ended the campaign with a cracking second of five to Lalor off a mark of 143.

A pound higher here, there is no denying I am taking a chance on him putting in a clear round, but if he takes to these unique obstacles on ground he adores he could blow his 14 rivals away, the best of which is the top weight and probably recent French import Gesskille.

Former Stayer’s Hurdle champion Lisnegar Oscar heads the field for the Grade Three National Hunt Hurdle race at 1.01, but he may have his work cut out to concede 10lbs to REMASTERED. The nine-year-old has a really good record when fresh and was a close up third to Koshari in this race 12 months ago off a mark of 133, and gets to run off a one pound lower mark here — any more rain will be massively in his favour.

The final turf card on the flat season at Doncaster looks a real cracker with the November Handicap at 3.13 being the main event of the day.

Last year’s winner Farhan bids to defend his title, but this looks a better renewal, and several of his rivals remain unexposed headed by the three-year-olds Israr, Nathanael Greene and Mr Alan. The best of the three could be the first named who despite his big weight may still be ahead of the handicapper even off a mark of 106.

However, he has to give away an awful lot of weight to the useful hurdler METIER. It is a fair while (1106 days) since he ran on the level, but we know he is a confirmed mud lark and even more importantly he arrives here a relatively fresh horse compared to the majority of his flat rivals. Saffie Osbourne takes a useful 3lbs off his back so the selection will run off 86, and he looks a solid each-way play at around the 10/1 mark.

The remainder of the Town Moor card looks hugely competitive but I think that we will get a really good run for our money on YOUNG FIRE (nap) in the seven furlong handicap at 2.39, while I am prepared to give another chance to BROKEN SPEAR in the concluding event at 3.45.
