Newcastle thrash Villa 5-1 to make a statement start to season

Newcastle 5-1 Aston Villa
by Roger Domeneghetti
at St James’ Park

Despite the resounding chants of “We are top of the League” from the Newcastle fans as full time approached, it’s worth remembering that nothing is decided on the first day of the season.

Yet, on this evidence, St James’ Park will be an even more formidable destination this season than it was last, Newcastle even more formidable opponents.

A genuine cutting edge in front of goal has been added to a defence that was so resolute last season; a piercing stiletto added to knuckle dusters.
