Close victory proves taxing for Klopp

JURGEN KLOPP was already looking ahead to Liverpool’s Premier League meeting with Leicester City after his side were involved in another thrilling Champions League encounter on Wednesday night.

Salzburg rocked up at Anfield to play their own brand of heavy metal football, and the Austrian outfit were able to live up to their growing reputation on the European stage.

It was an exciting night for supporters of both sides but a taxing one for the players and their managers.

Liverpool boss Klopp believes his team will need to improve as well as recover well ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League fixture.

“I knew before we [had] to improve a lot, but now everyone knows it,” said the German.

“We made it more intense than necessary, but we sorted it result wise. Three points, in the group — game on. Now recover and face Leicester.”

Liverpool’s defence was exposed on numerous occasions against Salzburg, and they allowed the Austrian champions to come back into the game with apparent ease.

Striker Hwang Hee-chan and winger Takumi Minamino were instrumental as the visitors came from three goals down to level the game.

Liverpool altered their shape and grabbed the winner in front of the Kop thanks to good work from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, with the latter scoring his sixth goal of the season.

“The job will be similar on Saturday and we have only three days to recover,” added Klopp.

“Christian Fuchs [the Leicester defender] was here tonight as a pundit, and all the others were on the sofa and watched the game, so that’s slightly different preparation for that game.

“I’m sure Brendan Rodgers thinks if we protect like we did tonight then Jamie Vardy will probably run five times on our goalkeeper!”

Napoli’s draw with Genk means Liverpool are now one point behind the Group E leaders, but their attention will now turn to remaining top of the Premier League.
