Liverpool extend Premier League lead further after easing past Newcastle

A PAIR of goals from midfielders helped Liverpool to another Premier League win, further widening the gap between themselves and second-placed Arsenal.

Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister were outstanding against Newcastle, and both got their name on the scoresheet in another important win.

Liverpool now hold a 13-point lead at the top of the table after Arsenal could only draw with Nottingham Forest.

Even though Arsenal have a game in hand, it feels like Liverpool have one hand on the trophy.

Some might say it’s already won, but Liverpool manager Arne Slot remains focused on the tasks at hand, the next of which is the Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain, who have not lost since November.

“I’m already thinking about Paris Saint-Germain because I watched them against City before we played City, and I’m impressed by the quality they have,” said Slot.

“I think they are on a similar run to us and haven't lost a game for a long time.

“I forget the league table now. I forget the Premier League until the moment we've played Paris Saint-Germain and then I will start to think about the Premier League again.”

Slot watched the Newcastle game from the stands after receiving a two-match touchline ban for acting in an improper manner following the draw with Everton at Goodison Park earlier in the month.

He might have enjoyed his different view of the game as Anfield was in a jovial mood, with songs being sung all around the ground throughout and the new Anfield Road stand noticeably involved as well as the Kop.

The convincing performance of Slot’s team meant there were no nerves present as Liverpool have a 20th league title in their sights.

Midfielders chipping in with goals helps, and even though he didn’t get his name on the scoresheet, Mohamed Salah was still able to show why he is the best player in the world at the moment with some neat creative play including an assist for Mac Allister.

It’s all falling into place for Liverpool in the league, to the point where much of their focus can now move to their game against another of Europe’s best teams in the Champions League next week.
