Road collisions in Wales down following controversial 20mph policy
20mph road signs in Brynawel, Wales

THE number of collisions on Welsh roads has fallen by almost a quarter since the controversial 20 mph speed limit came into force, records show.

The latest police statistics for road collisions for April to June 2024 show a 24 per cent reduction in both incidents and casualties on 20mph and 30mph roads, compared with the same period in 2023, making them the lowest figures recorded outside the coronavirus pandemic.

In the nine months following the introduction of 20mph speed limits in September 2023, collisions and casualties dropped by over a quarter.

The three quarterly reductions within this period are the largest outside the pandemic.

However, seasonal factors such as traffic volume and weather conditions mean that the April to June figures tend to be higher than those for January to March.

Welsh Transport Secretary Ken Skates said: “The data published today provides encouraging signs that things are moving in the right direction.

“We recognise there is still a way to go, we’ve always said it will take many years before we see any significant impact, but these figures are beginning to show a positive trend towards making our roads safer for everyone.”
