Wolverhampton-born golfer becomes the first Briton to win the PGA Championship in more than a century, writes DOUG FERGUSON
ENGLAND secured a fifth successive Grand Slam with a 43-28 victory over France in Bordeaux, extending their winning run to 38 Tests and sealing an eighth consecutive Women’s Six Nations title.
The Red Roses, fresh from last year’s World Cup success, were made to work for victory as France mounted a spirited fightback inspired by scrum-half Pauline Bourdon Sansus.
England settled after an early French try when Sarah Bern powered over from close range, before Ellie Kildunne struck twice to help establish a commanding lead. Jess Breach also crossed as the visitors capitalised on French errors to move 26-7 ahead at half-time.
France responded strongly after the break, with Bourdon Sansus scoring twice to cut into the deficit, but Breach’s second try halted the momentum and England regained control, overcoming the absence of several World Cup winners through injury and pregnancy.
Amy Cokayne added a late score from a line-out move, while France replacement scrum-half Alexandra Chambon was sin-binned for a high tackle on Maddie Feaunati.
Rose Bernadou crossed in stoppage time for the hosts, but England closed out another clean sweep to underline their dominance of the women’s game.
